Charu Maithani

Charu Maithani is a Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of New South Wales (UNSW, Sydney). Her interdisciplinary research explores media theory and practices, articulates conditions of mediality and the aesthetic-political relations of media objects, examining material-discursive practices across media studies, digital art, and broader visual cultures.

Maithani's current research encompasses two key areas: investigating the agency of screens in postmedia assemblages, and examining how AI facilitates perceptual and epistemological transformations in contemporary media culture, particularly the relationship between data practices and dominant ideological arrangements of vision. Her 11-year professional trajectory across three countries spans broadcast television, cultural organizations, and contemporary art spaces — from producing television shows to coordinating international art projects. This diverse experience across media production, cultural institutions, and academic research informs her critical engagement with media practices and digital culture.

Maithani holds a PhD in Arts, Design and Media from UNSW and a MA in Aural and Visual Culture from Goldsmiths College. Her scholarly work has been published in Convergence and Media-N Journal among other academic and professional publications.
